Wolverine, Deadpool and More Attack Planet Apes

To celebrate the new Planet of the Apes series, Marvel heroes like the Hulk and Wolverine meet simians of all kinds in a series of variant covers.


Marvel heroes from Captain America to Silver Surfer star with simians Planet of the monkeys in a series of variant covers hitting comic store shelves next February.


The cover coincides with the all-new release Planet of the monkeys the comic series was announced in June. “We are thrilled to welcome Planet of the Apes back to the House of Ideas!” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief CB Cebulski said at the time of the announcement. “The new saga in the plot will explore the limits of what this beloved franchise has to offer through bold comic storytelling, and we look forward to setting foot on this new adventure!”

This variant includes featured superstar artists and will appear in various series throughout the month. Wolverine Variant #30 shows Logan fighting a crowd of monkeys, while Invincible Iron Man Cover #3, by Francesco Manna, shows Tony Stark confronting the ape with the shattered Statue of Liberty, as revealed at the iconic ending of the 1968 original film Planet of the monkeys movie, standing in the background.

Marvel Planet of the monkeys History

Marvel’s acquisition of Planet of the monkeys licensing is the latest development in the long history that the science fiction series has shared with House of Ideas. Following the adaptation of the second film in the franchise by Gold Key Comics, Marvel gets Planet of the monkeys licensed and published a 29-issue series that ran from 1974 to 1977 and featured star creators of the era including Doug Moench, Gerry Conway and Mike Esposito.

Adventure on Planet Apes, written by Moench, is Marvel’s second series, debuting in 1975 and running for 11 editions. An omnibus collecting this issue is scheduled for a 2023 release.

Planet of the monkeys originally a 1963 novel by French writer Pierre Boulle and later adapted into a film starring Charlton Heston. Featuring a post-apocalyptic world dominated by apes that is finally revealed to be Earth, the franchise has spanned nine films with a tenth — Planet Ape Kingdom — will be released in 2024.
