Spawn History With DC

The December variant cover series marks the first instance of Al Simmons officially interacting with a DC hero other than Batman. Spawn met the Dark Knight in two separate crossovers published in 1994 — Image’s Spawn/Batmanwritten by Frank Miller and illustrated by Todd McFarlane, and DC’s Batman/Spawn: Demons of Warwritten by Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon and Alan Grant and pencil by Klaus Janson.

The two crossovers fall out of continuity and show Batman and Spawn interacting for the first time, with Miller writing off the heroes as openly antagonists to each other, to the point that Batman pinned the Batarang in Spawn’s face on the last page. Moench’s script, Dixon and Grant, by contrast, features the two’s interactions in a more welcoming way, with Batman taking more of the older mentor role over the younger Spawn.

The Dark Knight and Al Simmons will meet again in December Batman/Spawn #1, a new story that pits two guards against Owl Court. Written by McFarlane with art by Greg Capullo, the 48-page one-shot was originally planned for a 2006 release. After the book flopped for years, McFarlane and Capullo finally reunited in 2019 to bring the latest Image and DC crossover results. Synopsis for Batman/Spawn #1 reads, “Two dark heroes, cursed by tragedy, find their paths crossed again…but not by choice! What evil foe is at work, pitting the Dark Knights against Hellspawn? From the shadows of Gotham City to New York City, This epic show is the blockbuster you’ve been waiting for for almost two decades!”

Batman/Spawn featuring cover art by Capullo and a number of variants by McFarlane, Jim Lee, Capullo, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Jason Fabok, Sean Murphy, Francesco Mattina, J. Scott Campbell, Jorge Jimenez and Brett Booth. The one-shot hits comic book store shelves December 13 from DC.
