Suzume Advances Toward 10 Billion Yen Mark

Makoto Shinkailatest movie Suzume has generated 9.34 billion yen (~US$69.9 million) at the Japanese box office, making it the 54th highest-grossing film in the country so far.

Over the weekend (December 17 to 18), the supernatural adventure title earned 414 million yen (~US$3.1 million) and once again took second place in the weekend rankings, placing it just above James Cameronjust debuted Avatar: Waterway.

Though Suzume doing well, its current cumulative revenue lags behind that of its predecessor Weathering With You and Your name, which passed the 10 billion yen (~US$75.1 million) mark in their sixth week. In terms of number of days, Oricon previously reported just that Your name and Weathering With You generated 10 billion yen in 28 and 34 days respectively. Suzume generated 9.34 billion yen within 38 days.

Meanwhile, The First Slam Dunk remained at the top of the weekend rankings for the second consecutive time, with a score of 547 million yen (~US$4.1 million). His current total revenue is 4.18 billion yen (~US$31.47 million).

Elsewhere in the weekend rankings, That Time I Got Reincarnated as Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond and Red One Piece Movie dropped to sixth and ninth respectively. Kaguya-sama: Love is War -First Kiss Never Ends-which premiered on December 17, managed to place eighth in its first box office weekend.
