Incredible spider man gives readers a glimpse of the horrors that destroyed Peter and MJ’s relationship.
Amazing spider man #22 by author Zeb Wells (New Mutants, Ant Man) and artist John Romita Jr. (The X-Men are amazing, Iron Man) finds today’s New York City under attack by the recently returned Benjamin Rabin, an old nemesis of the titular hero with close ties to Peter Parker and Mary Jane. In fact, it was Rabin who dropped the once happy couple into the middle of an apocalyptic NYC a year earlier, where trouble saw them on the run from a mosaic monster before being rescued by an enigmatic stranger because they were armed to the teeth.

In his first appearance in 2008 Incredible spider man #555 by Wells and artist Chris Bachalo, Rabin puts his scientific and supernatural knowledge to use when unleashing hordes of undead Mayan warriors on behalf of the god of evil, Wayep. While Rabin proves incapable of defeating Spider-Man the first time around, his recent homecoming so far has led him to mark Peter and Mary Jane as sacrifices, even if only through flashbacks.
While the fallout from Rabin’s latest actions are still being revealed, it’s clear that they are inextricably linked to the end of Peter and MJ’s decades-long relationship, something that casts a shadow over the course of this time. Incredible spider man since the first issue. As well as ruining Peter’s romantic relationship, these events also alienated Peter from the rest of his friends and family. Editor Nick Lowe noted that the current storyline, which ends with May Incredible spider man #26, will reveal everything that happened before it all ended. Lowe also warned readers, “You might as well cry. I know I cried when Zeb explained his story.”
