Scarlet Witch’s Sister Finds a New Mutant Metal

Scarlet Witch #3 sees Wanda Maximoff and Polaris discussing a mysterious metal of unknown origin with anti-magic powers that might rival Mysterium.

Red Witch #3 sees the X-Men’s Polaris examine a mysterious new mutant metal that may be stronger than Mysterium.

  • When Polaris’ visit to her sister’s new magic shop is interrupted by a microscopic soldier who desperately needs help, Polaris and the Red Witch put their own mystery on hold to help on a fantastic journey through Sub-Atomica! Meanwhile, the dark past of enigmatic shop clerk Wanda, Darcy Lewis, returns… with a vengeance.

Mysterium, which first appeared in the 2020s SWORD #1, is an extremely durable metal that currently only the world’s mutants can craft. Born in the White Hot Room — the plane of existence that serves as home to the Phoenix and its host — Mysterium possesses a number of powerful properties, including the ability to conduct electricity and negate magic.

Scarlet Witch and Polaris’ new metals seem to have anti-magic abilities that surpass those of Mysterium. In the Red Witch #2, while inspecting the substance, Wanda muses: “There are so many unknowns in such a small rock. Not cold iron. Not Orichalcum. Not Uru. They could never resist my magic. Any Inquiry Spells are floating around you.”

Scarlet Witch’s New Storefront

Examining cryptic metals and other unusual artifacts is part of Scarlet Witch’s daily job in her new role as caretaker of the Emporium. Wanda started her shop Red Witch #1, reveals that his business venture is designed to sell magic items to people in need. The shop contains a portal called the Lost Door that only those in trouble can access, and so far Scarlet Witch has assisted a number of characters from across the Marvel universe, including Viv Vision and Storm.

Wanda’s need to help people stems from a desire to explore new beginnings after years of tragedy, especially her difficult relationship with her ex, Vision, as well as her relationship with Magneto. In Issue #1, Quicksilver initially laughs at his sister’s new venture into business, but is secretly impressed despite his skepticism.

Red Witch #3 was written by Steve Orlando, illustrated by Sara Pichelli, inked by Elisabetta D’Amico, colored by Matthew Wilson and written by Cory Petit of VC. This issue features cover covers by Russell Dauterman and variant covers by Alex Ross, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, David Nakayama, Nabetse Zitro, and Federico Blee. Red Witch #3 goes on sale March 8, 2023, from Marvel.
