Drifting Home begins with the story of a girl named Natsume Tonai who invites her friends to play in her old apartment complex. He invites Taishi Koiwai, Yuzuru Tachibana, and Kosuke Kumagaya to go looking for ghosts to the apartment that will be demolished.
Kosuke initially didn’t want to come because he had a problem so he didn’t want to talk to Natsume anymore. However, due to Taishi and Yuzuru’s insistence, Kosuke ended up going too. When the four children were on the roof of the apartment, two other children, namely Reina Haba and Juri Andou, also entered the apartment. It was simply because Reina wanted to find the Kosuke she liked.

Kosuke is annoyed by Natsume’s actions and thinks that Natsume is too attached to the apartment. Not to mention, Kosuke found his grandfather’s camera in Natsume’s hand. Fights and fights for cameras ensued. Without realizing it, Natsume almost fell from a height.
Just then, suddenly a heavy rain fell and obscured their view. When the six children woke up, they were already floating above the apartment with the water surrounding the building. Everything is sea as far as the eye can see.
With so many mysteries going on, the six of them must try to survive in the apartment. They meet Noppo, a mysterious child in the apartment. Unfortunately, their efforts to survive face many trials, starting from the running out of food supplies, worry because they don’t know the way home, to Reina who keeps blaming Natsume because she was the one who invited them to the apartment. Not to mention, some children began to suspect Noppo of hiding information about this incident.
This anime is really interesting to watch. In terms of story, Drifting Home presents a conflict that is more directed to the emotional side of the characters and invites the audience to understand what they feel. The sense of losing someone seems to be able to make humans change and be constrained by their past.
Interestingly, the past memories in this film are analogous to the apartment complex where Natsume and Kosuke live. There are many beautiful memories stored in the apartment when they were still close like family. These six small children seem to be sailing using an apartment and moving towards the ultimate goal, which is to let go of the past and try to make amends with the situation and themselves.

The bright design makes Drifting Home a pleasure to watch

Beautiful designs and animations adorn every detail in the Drifting Home movie.

For lovers of Japanese music, you may be familiar with the rock group ZUTOMAYO. Even though they only debuted in 2018, ZUTOMAYO’s songs immediately hit and topped various Japanese charts. In this Drifting Home movie, ZUTOMAYO also contributed their best songs as the theme song.

The use of the apartment complex and the water element was planned by the director
The director of Drifting Home, Hiroyasu Ishida, admitted that he had been interested for a long time to make a film set in an apartment. As a reference for Drifting Home, Ishida also visited famous complexes in various regions and made detailed replicas of them. According to him, the apartments they live in have a certain nostalgia so they can be loved in many ways.

Apart from having an apartment as a backdrop, the atmosphere of this film is also closely related to water. We will encounter many stretches of ocean and raindrops in Drifting Home. Again, Ishida incorporates this element for quite a unique reason.
“It seems, I have a certain feeling towards rain and water. This may come from my childhood. At any celebration or event it will always rain. It doesn’t leave me with any regrets or frustrations. Rain seems to have a very calming effect. I think my work is infused with this element of water, this rain, true to the title of this film.”
Ishida is quite philosophical in compiling this film. The film, which also has the title Ame wo Tsugeru Hyouryuu Danchi, has been very well done and has managed to channel an emotional adventure for the audience.
Drifting Home has indeed been done very well by Ishida. It presents a storyline that is both fun and full of emotion, complete with songs and animation designs that are bright and fun.
