Months after testing the waters with a blackened chicken sandwich, Popeyes is bringing the sandwich back for good. On Tuesday, the national chicken chain announced the return of the Cajun Spice Sandwich, the first permanent addition to the chain’s line of chicken sandwiches since its introduction in 2019.
On top of that, the chain also announced that it is allowing sandwich lovers to add cheese and bacon to any of its sandwiches. Add-ons, which include Havarti cheese, start at $1.50 while the blackened sandwich will be available a la carte from $4.99.
“Our chicken sandwich changed the QSR industry in 2019, and since then we have continued to innovate in the category to give our customers what they want – even more chicken sandwich options,” said proposed Sami Siddiqui, president of Popeyes North America. in a press release last year.
He added: “After the huge success of the chicken sandwich, we wanted to reinvent the traditional grilled chicken sandwich category with our brand new take on an unbreaded option, the Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich. We are thrilled that guests try this delicious new offering, and knowing our trend-setting history, we have a feeling it might spark some blackened chicken sandwich knockoffs down the road.”
While the Blackened Chicken Sandwich’s return is permanent, the chain is also running a limited-time promotion to coincide with the sandwich’s return. Starting Tuesday, anyone who orders a chicken sandwich combo either in the Popeyes app or on the Popeyes website will receive an extra side for free. This promotion runs until June 25.
