Not Expected to be Success, These 9 Films Suddenly Hit at the Box Office (Part 3)

3. Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a British drama film directed by Danny Boyle. This film tells the story of a young Indian from a slum who becomes a contestant in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Indian version. The film, which won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, explores themes of fate, love and passion while also providing a snapshot of poverty and social injustice in India.

Slumdog Millionaire wasn’t exactly expected to be a box office hitfor a number of reasons, including being created on a relatively small budget and not being heavily promoted. What’s more, it’s a British indie film with an unknown cast. In fact, Warner Bros. even had doubts about its prospects and barely released in the US. However, the film received positive reviews and was a box office hit , earning over $377 million from a $15 million budget.

2. Apocalypse

Apocalypse Now , which was released in 1979, tells the calm story of Captain Willard, a US Army special operations officer. He was sent on a secret mission to kill an American colonel who had turned violent in the middle of the Vietnam War. As Willard descends deeper into the forest, he experiences the horrors of war and the darkness of human nature. Ultimately, he must confront the true nature of his mission and the cost of conflict.

Apocalypse Nowdirected by Francis Ford Coppola and considered a very ambitious and complicated film that faced many problems while shooting. With lots of trouble on set and conflicts between the cast and crew, not much was expected from this film. Despite not having any expectations, the film was a critical and commercial success. This film grossed USD 150 million and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979.

1. Jokers

Joker explores the origins of the most iconic and well-known character in the DC Universe, the Joker, as failed comedian Arthur Fleck. Initially, the film was not expected to blow up at the box office . This psycho-thriller is marketed as a dark, dark film aimed at an adult audience. What’s more, psycho-thrillers aren’t a genre that usually does well at the box office like more mainstream, action-packed films. Apart from that, this film is not based on existing superheroes or comic characters.

In fact, Comscore’s senior media analyst estimates the film will only open at around $50 million. Moreover, this film was directed by Todd Phillips, who is known for his comedy films. It doesn’t help on expectationsthe film’s box office . Even so, Joker exploded at the box office and grossed $1 billion worldwide and earned multiple award nominations.
