A New Era for the Thunderbolts
Series writers Kelly and Lanzing promise fans a fresh and exciting take on the Thunderbolts team with their four-part story. “Alongside our old friend Geraldo Borges, we’re taking this opportunity to tell a very different kind of team book,” Kelly and Lanzing said. “This is a whole new era for the Thunderbolts, and it starts with a four-part espionage epic, an ever-shifting cast and a single overarching goal: to tear down a century of Nazi evil with justice like lightning.”
The Thunderbolts were created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley and first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #449 in January 1997. The team originated as a group of super-powered characters who helped protect the world after the Avengers were declared dead in 1996. Since then, there have been over ten different iterations of the team, often consisting of reformed super-villains. Barnes joins an impressive list of Thunderbolts leaders which includes Baron Zemo, Green Goblin, Luke Cage, Red Hulk, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent and Hawkeye.
An upcoming movie featuring the Thunderbolts is also planned for Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many of the characters featured in Kelly and Lanzing’s upcoming comics will appear in the film, including the Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova’s Black Widow, Red Guardian and U.S. Agent. It is set for release Dec. 20, 2024.
The first issue of Kelly and Lanzing’s new Thunderbolts series featuring connecting variant artwork from Casanovas goes on sale Dec. 6 from Marvel.
