This week’s roundup includes the latest from women’s publisher Improbable Heroes Studios, an all-ages story inspired by Finnish folklore, and one woman’s five-year journey through her life in comics.

A spoiled brat prince is turned into a licorice monster by a candy witch and must learn to stop being so bitter to break the curse.

Improbable Heroes Studios, a female-led comics publisher, is funding a new series of comics for all ages from USA today bestselling author Nohelty and Pittsburgh Steelers illustrator Oddling, Lucifer Licorice. The comic tells the story of the eponymous hero, who, after being turned into a licorice monster by a candy witch, embarks on an epic quest to regain his old life. Moober, a rag ghost, is Lucifer Licorice’s loveable sidekick, joining him as he travels in the bowels of the devil, fights the emo-demons and does everything in his power to stop being bitter and get his old body back.

UH Studios describes the comic book series as “perfect for fans of The regular show, adventure time, Stephen UniverseOr summer camp island.”

This exclusive hardcover art book will feature Jorge’s favorite works of art from his 15 years as an artist!

Why am I excited about this book? Spider-Geddonon which Molina worked with the writer Christos Gage and reintroduces Spider-Ma’am to Marvel Comics canon (a favorite). But recently, he made his debut as a lead artist for DC Comics on the Batman securities, not only working on the interior and cover, but also designing new characters and costumes for his iconic run on the Dark Knight. In this art book, Molina revisits some of his favorite works from his 15-year career as an artist, featuring previously seen works from covers and character designs, but also showing works by never-before-seen personal art and behind-the-scenes process work. The bearers of this project will be entitled to a retrospective on his evolution as an artist.

With over 250 humorous and heartfelt journal pages, Betje Ton chronicles family life in Los Angeles and her move to the Netherlands during a global pandemic.

With his incredibly popular ‘slice of life’ comics, Ton has one of the most subscribed to Substack accounts in the BD category. According to the designer, she started drawing one evening on her daily life. She didn’t stop for five years, telling relatable stories of homeschooling her children while trying to work and nearly setting her house on fire. This book is the best of these comics: about 5500 miles of comics, or more than 250 pages.

Emilia Ojala’s all-ages adventure, inspired by Finnish mythologies about a young raccoon dog’s quest to find his family, continues.

From Rocketship Entertainment’s new young reader line, Bottlerocket, comes the second book in Ojala’s all-ages fantasy adventure heavily inspired by Finnish folklore, fox lights. According to the creator, the Fox Fires (Northern Lights) is a doorway between this world and the land of the dead, allowing souls to visit loved ones. The comic’s main character, a young raccoon dog named Raate, wonders why he’s disappearing and heads north to find out what happened to Repo, the firefox whose burning fur is said to cause the Fox Fires to appear in the sky. Raate encounters all sorts of strange creatures and new friends on his journey. But in Book Two, she will also meet her first official antagonists.

According to the Kickstarter page, “The comic discusses the relationship between humans and nature, friendships, family, personal growth and teaches readers about Finnish folklore. So if you like folklore, cute animals and adventures heartwarming, you might like this story.

Four new never-before-seen comics from some of Scotland’s most exciting indie creators!

From the award-winning, Eisner Quindrie Press-nominated micropublisher, four new independent comics for 2023. Each book is 48 pages long and standard manga size and available to buy separately or as a discounted bundle (hey, the options are cool). The microeditor is highly recommended by RhythmIt is Dean Simons, who I emailed saying I was bored with everything. It’s not mainstream, and it’s not American. Additionally, Simons said Quindrie is supportive of LGBQTIA+. So let’s check it out together, folx!
