Tank Girl first appeared in 1988’s Deadlines, a British comic magazine, and its popularity exploded rapidly in the following years. Created by Alan Martin and original artist and future Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett, Tank Girl became a counterculture phenomenon, even spawning the 1995 feature film of the same name starring Lori Petty in the titular role alongside Ice-T, Malcolm MacDowell and Naomi Watts. A reboot of the franchise on silver screen had previously been planned with Margot Robbie set to star, but the film closed in late 2020 due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte explained Tank Girl universe as “Free and anarchic[…]from the art, to the characters to the politics, to the sort of fragmented nature of the stories they tell.”

Although the original comic book series abruptly ended shortly after the end of 1996’s Tank Girl: Apocalypse published by Vertigo, returned in 2007 under IDW Publishing with Martin and artist Ashley Wood’s Tank Girl: The Talented One. The series was followed by numerous other miniseries and one-shots, most of which were written and illustrated by IDW’s Martin and Parson, Albatross Funnybooks and Eric Powell’s Image Comics. Titan Comics acquired the rights to reprint Martin and Hewlett’s original version in 2012. Titan released what was touted as the first ongoing series for the character starting in January 2019, with the first four issues issued as Tank Girl: Action Gangfollowed by four final issues titled Tank Girl Forever.
