In 1982, the PBS American theater The series aired Jonathan Demme’s made-for-TV movie based on Kurt Vonnegut’s story, “Who Am I This Time?” Now, thanks to the Chicken Soup for the Soul TV YouTube channel, you can watch the rarely seen film online. The channel writes:
Mix the shy main man of a small town community theater with the charming telephone operator who moves to town and you have a perfect recipe for a delicious romantic comedy. Oscar winners Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken star as the couple who discover that affairs of the heart onstage can be a little less complicated than continuing the romance offstage. Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme skillfully weaves this endearing, blossoming love story from the story of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Although the video quality is grainy, the film is still important in serving as an early career vehicle for Sarandon, Walken and director Demme. It’s not exactly ‘Before They Were Stars’ – after all, in 1982 Walken had already won an Oscar for ‘The Deer Hunter’.
Sarandon had previously starred in “Rocky Horror” and been nominated for an Oscar for Atlantic City, and Demme, despite still being a decade away from his greatest work, had already directed the famous “Melvin & Howard.”
