Marvel Studios’ animated anthology streaming series What If…? at Disney+ plans to expand the diversity of superheroes represented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its second season. In an article posted on Marvel.com on March 9, 2023, Marvel shared the first glimpse of one of the new characters: Marvel’s all-new hero, Kahori , a young Mohawk woman on a quest to find her powers, this character created by Ryan. Little, a writer on the second and third seasons of What If…?
One of the anthology episodes in the 2nd season of What If…? will ask: “What would have happened if the Tesseract crashed to Earth and landed on the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederation before American colonization?” In this episode, the Tesseract will take on a new life and mythology, turning a lake into a gateway to the stars and leading Kahori, a young Mohawk woman, on a quest to find her powers.
Written by Little, “this episode was created in close collaboration with members of the Mohawk Tribe, such as historian Doug George and Mohawk linguist Cecelia King to ensure its cultural authenticity,” reports Marvel.com. “This episode takes place in the Mohawk language and is informed by the history of the Akwesasne area in what is now upstate New York.”
Director Bryan Andrews, executive producer AC Bradley, story editor Matthew Chauncey, and the rest of the production team “worked closely with members of the Mohawk Nation to design the look and environment of Kahhori,” reports Marvel.com, “and helped incorporate traditional Mohawk music to use in the score. .
Inspired by the Marvel Comics character What If…? from the MCU exploring alternate timelines where one small change can lead to a different universe. For example, Season 1 What If….? has episodes dedicated to exploring what will happen if Peggy Carter becomes Captain, T’challa takes up the mantle of Star-Lord, or even if a zombie virus contaminates Earth’s mightiest heroes.
