The new MCU movie is a huge domestic and international hit. Since May 16, Guardians 3 earned over $528.8 million worldwide, a major box office milestone. The film’s second weekend box office fare was also much better than expected for post-pandemic films from Marvel Studios. While the second weekend box office drop rate is around 60%, GOTG Vol. 3 only dropped to 47.6%. This is significantly lower compared to other recent MCU releases, as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever And Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania drops to 63% and 70%, respectively.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is unquestionably a financial success for Marvel and Disney. However, the film also contains many graphic scenes of animal abuse that showcase High Evolutionary’s brutal treatment of Rocket, Lylla, and others. While some have criticized GOTG Vol. 3 for these controversial scenes, the film’s cast members openly defended the director’s choice to include them. Miriam Shor, who plays Recorder Vin in the film, explained that the scenes were necessary for the story to have its full impact. “The stakes have to be this high for the story to work,” Shor said. “…If you’re a villain in these movies, you can’t get away with it, because it doesn’t work.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.
