(L to R) Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan pose backstage as Oscar® winners for Actress and Actor in a Supporting Role during ABC’s live broadcast of the 95th Oscars® at the Dolby® Theater at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
Given last year’s memorable Academy Awards ceremony for the wrong reasons, everyone was likely expecting a boisterous reprise or (in front of the producers) a quiet night. Incidentally, the show tends toward the latter.
And viral and memorable moments will mostly be remembered for being on the positive side –– Michelle Yeoh’s historic Best Actress win, Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser successfully wrapped up their trophy tour on the biggest stage (to a typically emotional response and applause rousing ) and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” proved to still be awards powerhouses.
Nominated for 11 Oscars, this indie sci-fi film might not seem like potential Oscar bait; Can a movie with dildo fights and hot dog fingers really win over stuffy voters? But win them, taking home seven awards, including the aforementioned acting wins, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture. The cast and crew are universally delighted by their recognition and throbbing with joy.

Elsewhere, it was also a good night for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, the multi-award winning World War I film. And there are trophies for movies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,’ and ‘RRR.
The ceremony around happy success is more mundane, feeling like a safe overcorrection after the Slap gate to make sure everything runs smoothly. They did (the show actually finished early), but even with Jimmy Kimmel’s drawings from Oscar Hosting 101’s book (he arrives on stage under a parachute after spoofing ‘Maverick’) everything is gently factory produced.
The host’s jokes are light and cheesy (enlivened by Elizabeth Banks sharing the stage with an actor in a bear costume and Hugh Grant telling the audience he’s “basically a scrotum” in a joke about using moisturizer while standing next to his ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ co-star Andie MacDowell), and things went smoothly. Musical performances range from energetic (“Naatu Naatu” RRR, who will claim the prize) to looking more like they’re about to perform in a coffee shop (Lady Gaga’s muted, but still effective “Hold My Hand” which ends with a sweet tribute to the original director’ Top Gun’ Tony Scott).
It may not be the most memorable of performances, but some moments will last longer than any sting of slap.
