Black Canary assembles a new Birds of Prey team in an upcoming DC Comics series from Kelly Thompson and artist Leonardo Romero.
On June 5, Thompson announced on Twitter that she, Romero, colorist Jordie Bellaire and letterer Clayton Cowles were working on a brand new Birds of prey series for DC Comics. Thompson also shared Romero’s character design for Black Canary/Dinah Laurel Lance, who will presumably form and lead the new team. “A whole new era begins!” Thompson tweeted. “Thompson, [Romero] & [Bellaire]…breaking hearts and faces on @DCComics this fall! Black Canary is building the most dangerous #BirdsOfPrey team yet…who do you think will make the cut?”
Romero also tweeted about the news, saying, “Any opportunity to work with [Thompson] and Jordie Bellaire is awesome, but I’m especially proud of what we did on #BirdsofPrey! Good to be back at @DCOfficial
and this time to work on a longer project! Can’t wait for you to see the rest of the team!”
Thompson – who also concludes it Captain Marvel run on June 7, 2023, with Captain Marvel #50 – talked more about the upcoming series in a recent Substack post. She wrote, “What a book! What a creative team! But what about the CHARACTERS?! Well, we’ll be rolling out the rest of the team this week — one for each day — so keep your eyes open. There Also will there be some exclusive covers revealed and maybe more? And then there will be additional information next week when the official solicitation and covers are revealed. She added, “I’m going to give ONE hint : You know I’m not just going to bring back an exact team that already exists, right?
