Most creators will build their own world with a different system to make anime more interesting. If you like different world building then space anime is the solution.

Anime Set in Space Cowboy Bebop

First released in 1998, Cowboy Bebop is a cross-generational anime that is still popular today. Here, you will be invited to see the daily life of a space bounty hunter. From universe exploration to interplanetary adventure, this anime by studio Sunrise has it all.

Cowboy Bebop focuses on Spike Spiegel and Jet Black floating through space on their ship, Bebop. On the way, they met Faye Valentine, Edward Wong, and Ein who later joined the crew. Together, they become bounty hunters to survive.

Anime Set in Space Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Like most space-themed anime, Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 also carries the concept of an Earth that is no longer fit for human habitation. However, instead of moving to another planet, the people of Earth moved underground to escape the bomb radiation that had destroyed Earth.

In the midst of despair, the faraway planet Iscandar gives new hope to Earth. With the technology of the Cosmo Reversal System, this technology is believed to be able to turn the barren Earth back to green. From strategist Susumu Kodai to seasoned captain Juuzou Okita, the crew is formed to travel 168,000 light years to Iscandar to save Earth.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Still a matter of timeless classic anime, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one of the top rated to date. Unlike other space anime which focus more on exploring the world, Legend of the Galactic Heroes focuses more on the political theme of the feud between two superpowers in outer space.

This tells of the conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance that has been going on for 150 years. However, the conflict began to change direction when both sides had new leaders, Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wenli. Both have different ideologies, but both want to end the war.

Cowboy Bebop isn’t the only cool space anime that studio Sunrise has made. Besides Cowboy Bebop, Sunrise also has Planetes which was released in 2003. This raises light topics, but it’s not boring to watch.

The story revolves around Ai Tanabe who works for an aerospace company, Technora Corporation. Ai works in the Debris Department, which is tasked with removing waste that harms the Earth and the Moon. Although Ai’s job is actually very important, her job is very underrated.

His company ignores Ai by giving him a broken ship which people refer to as Toy Box. Undeterred, Ai continues to do her job well to protect humanity.

Space Brothers

What happens if you accidentally see a UFO sighting directly? Will it inspire you to become an astronaut? Or will you just act normal? When this happened to the Nanba brothers, Mutta and Hibito, they immediately decided to become astronauts when they grew up.

Unfortunately, adult life is not what they had imagined. Mutta works for an automotive company, while Hibito is on his way to becoming the first Japanese to go to the Moon. However, a miracle comes when the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency accepts Mutta’s proposal, allowing him to catch up with his sister.

Not only presenting beautiful world-building, the five anime above also have exciting stories to watch. So, from the five anime above, which anime have you watched?
