Andor’s Diego Luna Teases Season 2’s Transformation

Following his first steps with the rebellion in season 1, Andor’s Diego Luna says his Star Wars hero will undergo more season 2 transformations. The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel has covered roughly one full year in Cassian’s life so far, chronicling his escape from Ferrix, the Aldhani heist, the Narkina 5 prison arc, and his emotional return to Ferrix. Through the events of the first 12 episodes, Cassian went from a thief with no purpose to someone who now has his own reason to fight.

In an interview with Collider, Diego Luna reflected on his journey as Cassian Andor in season 1 and teased what’s to come from Andor season 2. The star teased that his Star Wars hero would be undergoing major transformations in the next chapter of the Disney+ show, noting he still has a long way to go before becoming the character audiences met in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

How Andor Is Making Cassian A Great Star Wars Character

When the Andor series was announced, many fans met it with skepticism, though now that season 1 is in the books, showrunner Tony Gilroy and his team in front of and behind the camera have proven Cassian Andor is worthy of his own series. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Cassian was a fine supporting character for a story about Jyn Erso, but fans had a very limited scope of his past and how it molded him into the person he was in the 2016 film. The show decided to focus on his personal battles and eventual decision to take part in the fight against oppression as a symbol of everyone’s personal rebellion.

Cassian wasn’t a prepackaged hero, as the pilot saw him gun down two corporate security officers and went on the run. Without knowing it, he ran directly into the arms of Luthen Rael, who set him on his hero’s journey by adding him to the Aldhani heist and put him on the path to joining the Rebellion, even if he didn’t buy into it at first. Andor season 1’s 12-episode run gave the story time to develop at a natural pace without taking cheap story shortcuts, and thus earned Cassian’s character growth, planting seeds for his future in almost every scene through beautifully-written dialogue and thoughtful themes. Aided by Luna’s great performance, they told a story full of despair, adventure, and eventual personal triumph for the greater good. It’s a classic Star Wars story told in a dark tone, and it’s endlessly engaging because it takes itself and its subjects seriously.

What To Expect From Andor Season 2

Andor season 2 is currently in production, with a wrap date planned for summer 2023. Luna’s comments tease further character development for Cassian, and details from other cast and crew have dropped hints about future developments for intense villain Dedra Meero, desperate freedom-fighting senator Mon Mothma, and troubled soul Luthen Rael. The show’s scope expanded far beyond just its titular character in season 1, setting up a series of plot lines that Star Wars fans have already started theorizing about. While a specific release date for Andor two hasn’t been set yet, an expected 2024 release has been confirmed by Tony Gilroy.
