Grave of Fireflies

Taking the background during the war era, Grave of Fireflies is an anime that was produced by studio Ghibli in 1988. The storyline in this film is apparently adapted from the true story of the author, Akiyuki Nosaka, you know.

This film tells the story of two brothers named Seita and Setsuko. The war situation made them both lose their home and parents. They also went to their aunt’s house, but the difficult circumstances made the aunt also reluctant to accept them.

Having no choice, Seita invites his sister to live in an abandoned refugee camp and try to survive. Things become even more difficult for Seita when their food supplies run out and his little brother suffers from malnutrition. Will they be able to survive?

A Silent Voice

Produced by Kyoto Animation, A Silent Voice features beautiful animation with a fairly emotional storyline. Focusing on the topic of bullying, the film, also titled Koe no Katachi, tells the story of Ishida Shouya who has a life like other elementary school children.

One day, a boy named Nishimiya Shouko comes to his school as a transfer student. Having a disability in hearing and speaking, Ishida and his friends start to bully Nishimiya. This bullying began to be heard by Nishimiya’s parents and the school so that Ishida and his friends accused each other of who started the bullying.

As a result, Ishida is shunned by his friends and turns into a target for bullying. Years later, Ishida coincidentally meets Nishimiya again and is determined to mend his relationship with the girl.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas

Yoru Sumino’s I Want to Eat Your Pancreas has previously been made into a film and stars Takumi Kitamura and Minami Hamabe. However, make no mistake, the anime version is no less sad and can drain your tears, you know.

This anime tells the story of Haruki Shiga who coincidentally finds a journal in the hospital. The journal apparently belongs to his classmate, Yamauchi Sakura. Written in the journal, Sakura apparently has a disease in her pancreas and has little time left to live.

Because Haruki is the only friend who knows Sakura’s secret, Sakura asks Haruki to accompany her to spend the rest of her life.

Ride Your Waves

The romance fantasy genre, the film, also titled Kimi to, Nami ni Norareta, is no less sad and was screened at the International Festival du Film d’Animation d’Annecy in 2019, you know.

The film opens with a girl named Hinako who loves the sea very much and moves to a seaside area. One day, his apartment catches fire and he meets a firefighter named Minato. Having the same interests and love for each other, the two end up dating.

One day, Minato died trying to save someone who drowned on the beach. Hinako is of course very shocked and ends up moving to an area where she can’t see the beach anymore. Still saddened by Minato’s death, Hinako then sings a song she can listen to with Minato. Miraculously, Minato’s spirit appears in the water whenever Hinako sings.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms

Released in 2018, the film Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms has an interesting and touching storyline. As the title implies, this film tells the story of a girl from the Iorph tribe named Maquia. The Iorphs are immortals and they weave cloth to survive.

One day, the Iorph tribe was attacked by the royal army. The men were killed and the women would be arrested. Maquia manages to survive, but has to come to terms with the fact that her friends and village have been destroyed. On his way in the forest, he found a baby boy named Ariel who he later adopted as a child.

Despite having no experience as a mother, Maquia tries her best to be a mother to Ariel. However, Ariel is a human. He certainly grew quickly, whereas Maquia didn’t age one bit. Because of this, Ariel who was originally a spoiled child who loves her mother very much began to withdraw from Maquia. Ariel joined the royal army and left Maquia.
